Frequently Asked Questions

We print holiday photos and seaside pictures on our C430 — why does the cyan fall so fast?

Because photographs are the hungriest work a color printer does, and cyan carries the skies and the water. A full-page photo can lay down ten times the coverage the page rating assumes, and the blue half of the picture comes almost entirely out of the CLT-C404S. A family that prints a dozen photos a week is spending this cartridge the way an office spends it on a month of letters — the fall is the pictures, not a leak.

How many photographs does a 1,000-page cartridge really hold?

Far fewer than 1,000, and it helps to do the sum honestly. The rating assumes 5% coverage; a photograph covering the full page might use the cyan of fifteen or twenty ordinary pages. On that arithmetic a photo-heavy household might see a few hundred pictures from one cartridge, while a letter-printing household sees the better part of the full rating. The cartridge is the same — the pages are not.

Is this the right cyan for the Xpress C430?

Yes — the CLT-C404S is the cyan listed for the Xpress C430. The same cartridge also serves the Xpress C430W, the Xpress C480 and the Xpress C480FW, so one spare covers any of the four. It sits alongside the CLT-K404S black and the magenta and yellow of the same 404S family, each in its own slot.

Our prints have started looking warm and reddish — is the cyan to blame?

It is the first suspect. Cyan is the color that cools a picture down; as it fades, faces go ruddy, skies wash towards white and greens turn yellow and muddy. When the cast appears across everything you print — photos and documents alike — the cyan is nearing its end, and replacing it restores the balance without touching any other cartridge.

What does one cartridge mean in money terms for the C430?

The CLT-C404S costs $39.41 and is rated at 1,000 pages, which works out at about 3.94 cents of cyan per standard page. Photographs cost more, letters cost a fraction of that, and there is no cheaper way to run a compact color printer than to know the figure and order the next cartridge when the warning appears rather than after the colors drift.

What warranty stands behind this compatible cyan?

The same cover as every compatible cartridge we sell: a one-year warranty against defects and free returns throughout the first year, with the full wording on the shipping and returns page. Support runs Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST, and orders are dispatched from our IL, PA, GA and CA warehouses.
