Frequently Asked Questions

We mostly copy on this machine rather than print — does black toner still get used up quickly?

Yes, because every copy the DSC545 produces is a printed page, and it comes out of this same black cartridge. Scanning a document to email uses no toner at all, but copies and any incoming faxes that print go straight through the black supply, so a copy-heavy office can drain it faster than a print-only one expects.

How will we know the black cartridge is close to empty before it stops a job midway?

The machine tracks the remaining level and shows it on the control panel's supply status screen, and it posts a low-toner warning well before the cartridge is actually dry. Prints that start coming out faded or streaky in the text areas are the other early sign that the end is near.

Is this black cartridge made only for the DSC545 named in this listing?

No — the listing is titled for one model, but honesty matters here: this cartridge is built for the entire Ricoh Aficio MP C4503/C5503 platform, and the DSC545 is simply the Gestetner name for a machine in that family. The full platform list is Gestetner DSC535 and Gestetner DSC545. If your copier appears there, this is the correct black cartridge for it no matter which badge is on the front panel.

If the low-toner warning appears in the middle of a long run, can we finish the job?

Usually, yes. The first warning is an early alert, not an empty signal, and there is normally enough toner left to finish the work in front of you and keep going for a while. The sensible move is to order the replacement the day the warning shows up rather than waiting for the machine to stop outright.

Is this same black cartridge sold in a multi-pack for offices that go through it steadily?

It is — we also list a two-pack of this black at $91.76, which brings the per-cartridge cost down to $45.88 instead of $55.13. If this machine is your department's daily workhorse, the pair is the cheaper way to keep one cartridge in the machine and one on the shelf.

What happens if this cartridge arrives damaged or fails early?

It is covered by a one-year warranty, and you have a full year to return it free if it does not work out. The details live on our shipping and returns page, and if you would rather talk it through, our support team answers Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
