Frequently Asked Questions

Why is yellow the cartridge nobody notices — right up until every green turns blue?

Because yellow rarely gets a colour named after it in office printing. Its absence shows up sideways: green is cyan plus yellow, so when the 046HY quietly empties, greens lose their yellow half and turn blue, while warm tones go cold. By the time a page actually looks wrong, the Canon 046H yellow has usually been empty for a while.

What does yellow do besides printing yellow?

A surprising amount. Yellow halves every green with cyan, warms every red and orange alongside magenta, and puts the sunlight into skin tones and photographs. It is the background warmth of the whole palette — which is exactly why its failure makes prints look cold rather than obviously broken.

How many pages does the 046HY give us?

Up to 5,000 pages at the rated yield. At $36.47 that is roughly 0.73 cents per page for the yellow share of your colour work. Pages heavy with photography and graphics spend yellow faster than text pages with a small logo, as they do with every colour.

How does it compare with the standard Canon 046 yellow?

The standard cartridge, code 046Y, is rated at 2,300 pages and costs exactly the same $36.47 — about 1.59 cents a page. This 046HY is the Canon 046H high-yield version at 5,000 pages. Identical money, 2,700 more pages: the comparison makes itself.

Which printers take the Canon 046H yellow?

Canon's imageCLASS 046 family: the LBP654Cdw and LBP654Cfw printers and the MF731Cdw, MF733Cdw and MF735Cdw multifunction machines. If the cartridge in your yellow slot reads Canon 046, the 046HY is its high-yield replacement.

What happens if this cartridge gives us trouble?

It carries a 1-year warranty, and returns are free for a full year if it is not right for your machine. The terms are on our shipping and returns page, and our support team answers Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
