Frequently Asked Questions

TN820 and TN850 cost the same $33.43 — why does one print so many more pages?

It comes down to yield class, not printer or price. The TN820 is the standard-yield cartridge for this platform at 3,000 pages, while this TN850 is the high-yield version at 8,000 pages — more than two and a half times as many pages, in the same style of cartridge, for the same printers, and in this listing at the same $33.43 single price. That brings the TN850 down to about 0.42¢ per page, which is why most regular users who have a choice start here.

If the price is the same, is there any reason to pick the TN820 instead?

For very light users, possibly. If a printer prints so little that even 3,000 pages takes a very long time to use, a standard-yield cartridge can be the more proportionate purchase. But for anyone printing routinely, this TN850 single at $33.43 and 0.42¢ per page delivers substantially more work for the same money — there is no per-page contest between them at equal price.

How long will 8,000 pages last a typical office printer?

That depends on your monthly volume, but 8,000 pages is a long interval between swaps for most single-printer offices — many months of everyday documents from one install. Fewer swaps also means fewer interruptions and fewer chances to discover an empty printer in the middle of a job. Dense, high-coverage printing will reduce the total, as it does with any cartridge rating.

For which printers in our office is this the high-yield option?

For the Brother models in this list — DCP-L5500DN, DCP-L5600DN, DCP-L5650DN, HL-L5000D, HL-L5100DN, HL-L5200DW, HL-L5200DWT, HL-L6200DW, HL-L6200DWT, HL-L6250 DN, HL-L6250DW, HL-L6300DW, HL-L6400DW, HL-L6400DWT, MFC-L5700DN, MFC-L5700DW, MFC-L5750DW, MFC-L5800DW, MFC-L5850DW, MFC-L5900DW, MFC-L6700DW, MFC-L6750DW and MFC-L6800DW — this TN850 is the high-yield choice, and the TN820 is the standard-yield choice for those same machines. You do not need a different printer to step up in yield; if your machine takes one, it takes the other.

What drum unit does the TN850 use?

It works in the DR820 drum unit, the same drum used by the TN820. The DR820 is rated at 30,000 pages, and a single drum is $34.55. In practical terms you will use roughly three to four TN850 cartridges across one drum's life, replacing toner and drum separately as each reaches its own limit.

What if this compatible TN850 does not perform as expected?

It is protected for a year under warranty, and returns are free for a year too — our shipping and returns policy explains how it works. We send orders from warehouses in IL, PA, GA, and CA, and our support line is open from 9 AM through 5 PM CST if you need troubleshooting after install.
