XP-420 Ink: The Full 220XL Shelf

Epson lists the XP-420 with the complete 220 code set — standard T220120 / T220220 / T220320 / T220420 and high-capacity T220XL120 / T220XL220 / T220XL320 / T220XL420 — with DURABrite Ultra pigment ink in every position. Rated yields (ISO/IEC 24711): standard black up to 175 pages and each colour up to 165; XL black up to 500 pages and each colour up to 450. We stock the XL tier only, because on this printer the standard cartridges run out fast enough that the XL's cost per page wins for almost everyone.

Name discipline matters here: the XP-4200 — a different, newer printer — is a 232-family machine and takes none of these cartridges. XP-420 and XP-4200 differ by two characters and share no ink. Before ordering, read the badge on the printer itself or the code on the cartridge you are replacing; if it does not start with 220, you are on the wrong page.

Which 220XL should you buy?

One colour ran out: replace just that colour — black, cyan, magenta and yellow singles are $10.49 each.
Full refresh: the Set of 4 ($35.94) replaces all four positions in one box.
Print every week: the Set of 9 ($67.07) stocks three blacks and two of each colour — the pattern home offices actually consume.

Chip, ink and everyday use

Every cartridge carries a new compatible chip, so the XP-420 reads the ink levels normally; a one-time on-screen confirmation is the printer checking a non-Epson cartridge, not an error. The ink itself is pigment-based DURABrite Ultra type: prints come out dry to the touch, resist smudging when highlighted, and hold up better than dye ink for school and office documents that get handled. Keep spare cartridges sealed in their bags until install day — pigment ink keeps best away from air and direct light.
