Frequently Asked Questions

What does the black cartridge have to do with color quality on a 7800GX?

A great deal. On a graphics machine, black lays down the text over color images, builds the deep rich blacks in photographs and artwork, and carries the fine detail that makes a proof look finished. A tiring black cartridge shows up as grayish shadows and soft type long before any color runs out — which is why GX users replace black on its own schedule, not the colors'.

Is the GX's black cartridge different from the rest of the 7800 range?

It is not. The GX letters describe the printer's graphics configuration; the black supply is the single platform design, 106R01569, shared with the base 7800 and the DG, DN and DX versions. One code to match, one cartridge design across the whole family.

How many pages does this cartridge deliver?

Up to 24,000 pages at the standard 5% coverage measure, at $112.34 — about 0.47 cents of black per page. Graphics pages with heavy dark coverage draw toner faster than the yardstick assumes, so a proofing-heavy GX may see fewer; the rating remains the fair basis for comparing cartridges.

Why is black sold separately from the colors at all?

Because it is consumed on a different clock. The three color positions take their own separate cartridges with their own part numbers, and in graphics work black often needs replacing while the colors still have life — or the reverse. Separate listings let you replace exactly the position the printer is asking for.

The title says "Cartridges" — how many are in this listing?

One single cartridge, priced at $112.34. The plural wording in the name is not a count. If the studio wants the next black already on the shelf during a long proofing job, the same cartridge is bundled in this family's two, three and five packs.

What backing and shipping come with it?

Our 1-year warranty and free returns for a full year, detailed on the shipping & returns page. Orders ship from IL, PA, GA and CA, support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST, and the rest of the range is gathered on the Xerox supplies page.
