Frequently Asked Questions
I changed the black toner and the streaks are still on every page — what else can it be?
The drum. Toner trouble and drum trouble look different: low toner fades and lightens, while a worn drum prints its faults — lines down the page, spots that repeat at identical spacing, a gray haze where the page should be white — at full strength, on every sheet, whatever the toner level. If a fresh cartridge changed nothing, the imaging surface of the drum unit is the remaining suspect, and the repeating spacing of the marks is the giveaway: they come from the same worn spot going around with the drum.
The title says "Drum Cartridges" — how many units are actually in the box?
One. The plural in the listing title is a naming habit of the range; this listing is a single black drum unit — one 013R00602, rated for up to 80,000 pages of drum life, priced at $190.77. If you want spares on the shelf as well, the multi-packs of this same unit are listed separately.
Why does the machine keep asking for a drum after I replaced the toner?
Because the two consumables are counted separately. The printer tracks toner by how much is left and the drum by how many pages it has imaged; fitting a toner cartridge does nothing to the drum's 80,000-page clock. The replace-drum prompt belongs to the drum unit alone and clears when the drum itself is changed.
Is the drum in the 242 the same unit the larger machines take?
Can I leave a worn drum in and just live with the print quality?
You can, but it usually costs more than it saves. Every page carries the fault, reprints burn paper and toner, and on customer-facing work the streaks become part of the document. A tired drum does not typically harm the machine by staying in it — it simply prints its wear onto everything until it is changed, so the sensible moment is when the faults first become regular.
What cover and delivery come with it?
This unit is backed by a one-year warranty and free returns for a year, as set out on the shipping and returns page. Orders ship from our IL, PA, GA and CA warehouses, and our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM–5 PM CST. The wider range for these machines sits on the Xerox toner page.
