The printer has four slots — why does this set contain five cartridges?

Because the fifth is a shelf spare, not a fifth slot. What does the extra cartridge cost compared with the 4-pack?

The 4-cartridge set is $130.39 and this 5-cartridge set is $160.39 — the spare adds exactly $30.00. Averaged across the box, each cartridge works out to about $32.08. Against the class ratings — 9,000 pages for the 310-5807 black, 8,000 each for the 310-5810, 310-5809 and 310-5808 colors — the per-page economics stay in the same band as the standard set: roughly 0.36 cents for the black's class, roughly 0.41 cents for a color's class.

Which cartridge runs out first, so the spare gets used?

Usually a color. The black's 9,000-page rating outlasts each color's 8,000, and real department work leans unevenly on the 310-5810 cyan, 310-5809 magenta and 310-5808 yellow besides. Whichever color your documents favor will call for the spare first; the black is the last slot a 5100 typically asks about.

Are these Dell-made cartridges?

No. They are compatible cartridges built to the 310-5807, 310-5810, 310-5809 and 310-5808 specifications for the Dell 5100, produced by a third-party manufacturer. Each one — the spare included — carries our 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns.

Does the spare have to be installed within a certain time?

No deadline is imposed by us: the spare simply waits on the shelf, covered by the same 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns as the four that go straight in. When its slot empties, it installs like any other cartridge from the set — one slot at a time, nothing else disturbed.
