Frequently Asked Questions

Our MF731Cdw copies as much as it prints. Does copying wear this set down differently?

A copy is a print as far as toner is concerned — every copied page draws from the same four cartridges: black 046HBK, rated at up to 6,300 pages, and cyan 046HC, magenta 046HM and yellow 046HY at up to 5,000 pages each. The trap on a multifunction machine is volume you never see in a print queue: walk-up copies of color originals pull on all three colors, so an MF731Cdw doing heavy copying can empty its color slots sooner than its print counts suggest.

What exactly are we getting for the MF731Cdw in this set?

The four Canon 046H cartridges the machine runs on, one per slot, each sealed separately: 046HBK black, 046HC cyan, 046HM magenta and 046HY yellow. Buy them as singles and they total $144.69; the set is $89.21, saving $55.48. Because they are packaged individually, you can refresh all four slots in one short session or fit them one at a time as each slot calls for it.

Will scans and faxes use up the color cartridges?

No. Scanning and receiving a fax onto screen or memory put nothing on paper, so they draw no toner at all. Toner only leaves a cartridge when the machine prints — a document, a copy, or a fax you choose to print out. If the colors seem to fall faster than your printing explains, walk-up copying is the first place to look.

Is the high-yield set worth it on a machine that also scans all day?

Judge it on printed pages, not powered-on hours. The Canon 046H class carries 6,300 pages on black and 5,000 per color, against 2,200 and 2,300 for the standard Canon 046 family at the same single-cartridge prices in this store. If your MF731Cdw prints and copies daily, the H yields stretch the gap between cartridge changes considerably; if it mostly scans and prints twice a week, the standard family would honestly do.

Can we stagger fitting the cartridges instead of swapping all four together?

Yes — each slot is independent. A fresh 046HM can go in beside a half-used cyan and yellow without any pairing issues. The only argument for swapping all four at once is housekeeping: it resets every slot to the same starting point, which makes the next round of low-toner warnings arrive closer together and easier to plan around.

How are faults and returns handled on a set bought for an MFP?

Per cartridge. Each of these compatible Canon 046H cartridges carries its own 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns, so a single misbehaving color is replaced or returned on its own merits. The full policy is on our shipping and returns page. Sets ship from whichever warehouse — Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia or California — is nearest you, and our team answers Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
