Nobody noticed the yellow running out — until the greens turned blue. Why does that happen?

Because yellow is the quietest colour on the page. It builds greens (with cyan), warm oranges and the brightness in photos, but a page can lose most of its yellow and still look almost right — until greens tip over into blue and everything warm goes cold. By the time a copy room notices, the GPR-23Y has usually been fading for a while.

How can we tell which colour is low when a page just looks "off"?

Print the machine's test or status page and look at each colour block separately. A pale or streaky yellow block beside strong cyan and magenta blocks settles it. Judging from a normal document is unreliable precisely because yellow's contribution is spread thin across everything — check the blocks, not the paperwork.

The machine warned yellow was low a week ago, but pages still look fine — swap now or wait?

You can usually wait until quality actually moves, but keep the spare in the building. The low warning arrives with toner still in reserve, so there is a grace period — on a production machine the sensible routine is to order when the warning appears and change the GPR-23Y when greens start cooling, rather than discovering an empty cartridge mid-run.

What does the yellow share of a page cost?

At $57.70 and a rating of up to 14,000 pages, roughly 0.41 cents per page at the 5% coverage the rating is based on. Work heavy in yellows and greens draws it faster; standard office colour barely notices it. Either way, it is the joint-cheapest of the three GPR-23 colour singles.

Does yellow really run out at the same rate as the other colours?

All three GPR-23 colours carry the same 14,000-page rating, but real consumption follows your output: a site copying mostly charts and logos may burn cyan fastest, a photo-heavy one may burn yellow. The ratings are equal; your pages decide the order they finish in — which is why each cartridge is sold and changed separately.
