Frequently Asked Questions

What does the H in Canon 045H actually stand for — and what does it buy you?

The H stands for high yield. This Canon 045H black cartridge (045HBK) is filled for up to 2,800 pages, and here is the honest comparison: the standard Canon 045 single on our shelves costs exactly the same $32.49 but is rated at 1,400 pages. Same money, twice the pages — the per-page cost halves from about 2.32 cents with the standard cartridge to roughly 1.16 cents with this 045HBK. If both cartridges are on your shortlist, the arithmetic is not close.

How long will 2,800 pages last in practice?

It depends entirely on your monthly volume. A home office printing around 200 pages a month is looking at roughly fourteen months from one cartridge. A busier desk at 500 pages a month will work through it in about five to six months. The 2,800-page rating is measured at the standard 5% page coverage, so a month full of dense, graphics-heavy pages will land you a little under the rating, while plain text months can beat it.

Which printers is the 045HBK made for?

The ImageClass LBP612Cdw and ImageClass MF632Cdw, and the ImageClass MF634Cdw — the Canon color machines built around the 045 cartridge family. This listing is the black cartridge only; the cyan, magenta and yellow 045H cartridges for the same printers are separate listings. If your machine takes a Canon 045 cartridge of any color, this is its high-yield black.

Who makes this cartridge?

This is a compatible cartridge, built by a third-party manufacturer to the Canon 045H specification — same 045HBK fit, same 2,800-page yield target, same place in the printer. It is not made by Canon, and that is precisely why a high-yield black costs $32.49 here instead of the considerably higher price of the name-brand box. What backs it is our own cover, set out in the last answer below.

Why might my real page count come in below 2,800?

Because the rating assumes a page with about 5% of its area covered in toner — a typical letter or invoice page. Print pages with big logos, shaded tables, photos or full-bleed color documents and each page drinks more toner, so the cartridge empties sooner. The rating exists so cartridges can be compared fairly against each other, and on that comparison this 045HBK doubles the standard Canon 045. Your mileage will land somewhere around the rating depending on what your printer actually produces.

What cover does the cartridge come with?

Every cartridge we sell carries a 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns. If this 045HBK misbehaves at any point in that year — or you simply ordered the wrong cartridge and the box is unopened — the return costs you nothing. The full terms are on our shipping and returns page.
