Frequently Asked Questions

Is the XL worth $28.97 more than the standard TN920?

On the numbers, it is one of the easiest upgrades in the catalogue to justify. The standard TN920 is $121.92 for 3,000 rated pages — about 4.1 cents a page. This TN920XL is $150.89 for 6,000 rated pages — about 2.5 cents a page. The extra $28.97 does not buy a slightly better cartridge; it doubles the fill and cuts the cost of every page by more than a third. Unless your printing is genuinely occasional, the XL pays its premium back inside its first few thousand pages.

Where does the XL sit in the TN920 family?

Second of four rungs, and for many offices the natural home. Above it, the TN920XXL (11,000 pages, $204.29) and TN920UXXL (18,000 pages, $241.49) print cheaper still per page, but ask more money today and reward only serious volume. The XL doubles the standard fill for a modest step in price, which matches the reality of a printer doing a few thousand pages a month. It is the rung where the family's value curve bends.

Which printers take the TN920XL?

The nineteen-model TN920 platform in full: HL-L5210DN, HL-L5210DW, HL-L5210DWT, HL-L5215DW, HL-L6210DW, HL-L6210DWT, HL-L6217DW, HL-L6310DW, HL-L6415DW, HL-L6415DWT and HL-EX415DW on the printer side, the DCP-L5510DN, and the MFC-L5710DN, MFC-L5710DW, MFC-L5715DW, MFC-L5717DW, MFC-L5915DW, MFC-L6810DW and MFC-L6915DW all-in-ones. If the spent cartridge reads any TN920 code, this one fits the same slot.

How long does a 6,000-page cartridge last in practice?

At 500 pages a month — a solid small-office pace — a full year. At 1,000 a month, two quarters. At 2,000 a month, a single quarter, at which point the XXL's larger fill deserves a look. Ratings follow the standard 5% coverage measure, so form-heavy or graphics-heavy black printing will shorten those spans; text documents track them closely. Either way, the XL halves the changeovers of the standard cartridge it replaces.

There is a 2 pack of this cartridge — should I consider it?

If this printer's volume is established, it is worth a look: the 2 pack is $288.45, which is $13.33 less than two singles and drops the per-cartridge price to $144.23. That is a modest saving rather than a dramatic one, so the pack earns its place mainly where a spare on the shelf prevents emergency orders. For a first XL purchase on an unproven machine, this single is the lower-commitment way to test the rung.

What protection do I have if the cartridge is faulty?

Brother's manufacturer warranty stands behind the cartridge as genuine OEM stock, and our terms give you 30 days from delivery to return it in all cases — both detailed on the shipping and returns page. Stock ships from the closest of our IL, PA, GA and CA warehouses, and the support team is on hand Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
