Three cartridges and no black — why is the set built that way?
Because black lives on a different replacement rhythm. The black slot in these machines turns over far faster than the colors and has its own standard and high-yield options, so Brother sells the color row — TN431C, TN431M and TN431Y, 1,800 pages each — as its own set. If your black is also low, it is a separate line on the order: a TN431BK, or the TN433BK if you run high-yield blacks.
What does the set save against the three color singles?
The singles are $114.61 apiece — $343.83 for the trio. The set is $317.17, so it keeps $26.66 in your pocket, and against the combined list price of $444.04 the discount is deeper still. Per cartridge the set works out at about $105.72. It is the same sealed genuine stock in all three slots; the saving is purely for buying the row at once.
When does changing all three colors together actually make sense?
When they have aged together. Cartridges installed on the same day, printing the same documents, reach the end within sight of each other — and a team facing a big color job (a proposal run, a conference pack) is better served by a fresh, matched row than by nursing three tired cartridges through it. Matched-age colors also keep the machine's color balance predictable, which matters when output has to match a brand standard.
Only my magenta has run out — should I still buy the whole set?
No — take the single. If cyan and yellow are reporting healthy reserves, the set would park two cartridges in a drawer to save money on a third you don't need yet. The exception is the printer whose colors were installed together and are all reporting low: there, the set is both cheaper than three singles and kinder to your schedule.
