Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answer first: is $66.09 a lot for a 2,000-page black cartridge?
Yes — at roughly 3.3 cents per page, this is one of the pricier black cartridges we sell, and we will not dress that up. The SP C220 generation was built around small, low-yield cartridges, and 2,000 pages is all a black cartridge holds. What you are paying for here is availability: a working compatible supply line for an older color machine that many sellers have simply stopped supporting. If your C220 still prints well, this keeps it in service; the honest trade-off is cost per page, not quality of output.
Why does the black cartridge matter so much on a color printer?
Because nearly everything you print leans on black: text pages, invoices, shipping labels, the black component of mixed documents. When the black cartridge is empty, most C220-series machines refuse to print at all — even a page you think of as "color" usually will not run. A dead black cartridge effectively parks the whole printer, which is why the black is the one cartridge in this machine you never want to discover empty on a deadline.
How long does 2,000 pages actually last in a small office?
At 100 pages a month, about 20 months. At 250 pages a month, roughly 8 months. At 500 pages a month, you are looking at a change about every 4 months. Those figures assume the standard 5% page coverage behind the 2,000-page rating; dense pages with heavy black fill will land lower, light text-only printing a little higher. For a genuinely light-duty C220, one cartridge is a long runway.
Which printers does this black cartridge work in?
It is made for Ricoh Aficio SP C220. Match the 406046 cartridge number against the one printed on your current black cartridge before ordering — the C220 series sits alongside several similar-looking Ricoh color models that use different cartridges, and the number on the cartridge is the reliable check.
How can I tell the cartridge is truly empty and not just warning me?
The C220 series starts warning well before the cartridge is done, so a low-toner message alone is not a finish line. Keep printing while output stays clean and even. The real end shows up as faded or streaky black text that does not improve. Swapping at the first warning throws away toner you already paid for — with a cartridge at this price, that leftover matters more than usual.
What protection comes with it if something goes wrong?
Every compatible cartridge we sell carries a 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns, so a cartridge that fails early is replaced or refunded rather than argued about — the full terms are on our shipping and returns page. Orders ship from whichever of our warehouses — Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia or California — gets it to you fastest, and support answers Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
