Is the 522 black really rated lower than the colors?

Yes — 4,500 pages for black against 7,500 per color, and that is Epson's own published rating for the family (ISO/IEC 24712). It's the reverse of the 502 family, which surprises many shoppers; the numbers on this page are the 522 family's real ones.

Is this black pigment or dye?

Dye. The entire 522 family is dye ink, black included — Epson's datasheets state it directly ("Ink Technology: Dye Ink," with black listed as dye). If you need pigment black, that's the 502 or 512 family, for different printers.

Which printers does it fit?

All eight verified 522 models: ET-2400, ET-2720, ET-2800, ET-2803, ET-2840, ET-4700, ET-4800 and ET-4810. Each was confirmed in Epson's own documentation.

My printer is an ET-2850. Will this work?

No — the ET-2850 is a 502 printer despite the similar name. Its black bottle is a 127 mL pigment bottle with different keying. The ET-2800 takes this bottle; the ET-2850 does not.

How many milliliters are in the bottle?

65 mL — Epson's official fill for the genuine T522120-S, and the figure we spec. Some compatible listings advertise 70 mL fills; our published volume follows the official specification.

Does the bottle have a chip?

No chip. Bottles are mechanical refills: keyed nozzle, auto-stop, done. There is no recognition error a bottle can cause.

Why does my black run out before the colors?

Because of the family's design: a 4,500-page black against 7,500-page colors, in printers that mostly print text. Most 522 owners reorder this bottle more often than any single color — which is why it's sold as a single, so you never have to buy colors you don't need just to get black.

Text looks a little soft compared to my old laser. Is the ink faulty?

Almost certainly not — dye black on plain paper has a softer edge than pigment or toner. It's the expected character of this family's ink, best suited to everyday documents rather than archival, water-exposed prints.

Can I top up the black tank before it's empty?

Yes. Topping up the same family's ink mid-tank is normal EcoTank practice. Just never mix families — 522 ink in a 502 tank (or the reverse) is a different ink set.

How do I store a part-used bottle?

Capped, upright, room temperature, out of direct sunlight.
