Our 2230's prints have gone light and patchy — is the cartridge finished?

Usually, yes — that is the classic end-of-toner picture. As the cartridge empties, there is less toner to lay down, so pages come out faded, streaked or lighter on one side. Before concluding anything else, take the cartridge out and rock it gently side to side: if print comes back darker and evener for a while, the cartridge was simply running dry and a replacement — this 330-4130 — is what the printer is asking for.

Why does shaking it bring the print back temporarily?

Because the remaining toner settles unevenly as the level falls, and rocking the cartridge redistributes it across the full width. It is a legitimate short-term recovery, good for finishing the work in hand — but the total toner left is unchanged, so treat the improvement as borrowed time and have the new cartridge ready.

How many pages should a fresh cartridge give us?
