Does print density change how many pages I get from the 137 in an MF229dw?

Directly. Toner use is proportional to how much toner each page carries, and density settings control exactly that. Push density up for richer blacks and every page consumes more, shortening cartridge life; pull it down and pages lighten but the cartridge lasts longer. What does toner-save mode actually trade away?

It trades richness for economy. In toner-save, the printer lays down a thinner layer of toner: text stays perfectly legible but looks greyer, and solid areas lose their punch. For internal drafts, file copies and anything read once and recycled, that trade is almost free money — it can stretch a cartridge's useful life meaningfully. For client-facing letters, contracts and anything carrying your letterhead, switch it off.
