    Frequently Asked Questions

Most of what our D1170 does is copying, not printing — does that change how fast the cartridge empties?

Not in the way most people hope. A copy and a print draw on the same Canon 120 cartridge in exactly the same way — every page that comes out of the D1170, whatever produced it, takes its toner from the one cartridge. Offices that mostly copy are often surprised by how fast a cartridge goes, because copy volume never shows up in anyone's print queue. Count copies in your monthly total: a D1170 making 700 copies and 300 prints a month is a 1,000-page-a-month machine, and a 5,000-page cartridge lasts it about five months.

What does the 5,000-page rating actually assume?

It assumes the industry-standard 5% page coverage — roughly, a page of ordinary text with margins. That is a fair basis for letters and forms, and a poor one for the way a copier often gets used: a dense original, a page of solid graphics or a form with heavy shading can use several times the toner of a text page. So treat 5,000 as the rating for mixed, normal work. If your D1170 mostly copies dense documents, expect less; if it mostly prints correspondence, expect the rating to hold or better.

At $32.42, how does the cost per page land?

At about 0.65 cents per page — $32.42 divided by the 5,000-page rating. For a machine doing copy-heavy departmental work, the useful way to use that number is per box of paper or per month: at 1,000 pages a month, toner for the D1170 runs about $6.50 a month at rating. Even if your coverage habits pull the real yield down by a quarter, you are still looking at a running cost that stays in single figures monthly. It is not the cheapest cartridge per page in the Canon catalogue, but it is a thoroughly predictable one.

Copies are coming out light, but prints from the computer look fine — is it the cartridge?

Probably not, and the difference itself is the clue. Prints and copies share the same cartridge and the same print path, so a dying cartridge fades both. When copies alone are light, look first at the copy side: the original may be pale, or the copy density setting may have been turned down. Run the test honestly — print a page you know is solid black text. If that prints dark, the cartridge is fine. If everything is light, then yes, work through the cartridge: rock it gently to redistribute the toner, and if nothing improves, it is near its end.

Is the D1170's cartridge different from the one in a D1150 or D1180?

No — all three take this same Canon 120 cartridge, as do the D1120, D1320, D1350, D1370 and D1520. Canon built this whole imageCLASS D family on one cartridge design, which is why a listing like this one, written for the D1170, describes a cartridge that physically serves its siblings too. If your office runs more than one of these models, spares are interchangeable between them.

What cover do we get with a compatible cartridge?

The same cover we put on everything: a 1-year warranty against defects and 1-year free returns if the cartridge does not perform as it should. The full terms are on our shipping and returns page. And if you would rather talk before ordering, our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
