Frequently Asked Questions
Why does this drum cost over $300 when it holds no toner at all?
Because of how long it works. The DR920 is the imaging drum for Brother's current workgroup mono platform, rated at 45,000 pages — the surface every one of those pages is formed on. At $320.79 that is about 0.7 cents of drum cost per page, which is the cheapest per-page figure of any part in the machine. The ticket looks large because you are buying three to four years of imaging in a single part.
How many toner cartridges will one DR920 outlast?
Several, whichever fill you run. Against the standard TN920's 3,000 pages, one DR920 spans about fifteen cartridges. On the TN920XL at 6,000 pages, roughly seven. On the TN920XXL at 11,000 pages, about four — and even the giant TN920UXXL at 18,000 pages needs changing more than twice in one drum's span. That is the rhythm of this platform: toner comes and goes; the DR920 is the long-serving constant underneath.
Which printers use the DR920?
Twenty models: the HL-L5210DN, HL-L5210DW, HL-L5210DWT, HL-L5215DW, HL-L6210DW, HL-L6210DWT, HL-L6217DW, HL-L6310DW, HL-L6415DW, HL-L6415DWT and HL-EX415DW printers; the DCP-L5510DN; and the MFC-L5710DN, MFC-L5710DW, MFC-L5715DW, MFC-L5717DW, MFC-L5915DW, MFC-L6810DW, MFC-L6915DW and MFC-EX915DW all-in-ones. It is the single drum for the whole TN920 platform, so there is no variant to choose between.
What are the signs this drum — not the toner — is wearing out?
Defects that repeat at fixed intervals down the page, a grey haze across white areas, or fine lines that stay in exactly the same place sheet after sheet — and, decisively, defects that do not change when you fit a fresh toner cartridge. The toner cartridge rides inside the DR920's frame, so owners often swap toner first; when the marks survive the swap, the drum surface itself is the worn part.
Do I have to reset anything after fitting a new drum?
Yes — the drum counter. Brother machines on this platform track drum pages separately from toner, and the manual walks you through resetting the counter with the new DR920 fitted, so the machine's 'Replace Drum' timing starts again from zero. Do not reset the counter for an old drum to silence the message: the count exists because the surface genuinely wears, and print quality will keep telling on it.
What cover does this drum unit carry?
Our terms allow the DR920 to be returned within 30 days of delivery in all cases — the details are on the shipping and returns page — and Brother's manufacturer warranty stands behind it as genuine OEM stock. Stock moves from Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia or California, and support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
About This Genuine Brother DR920 Drum Unit
The DR920 is the genuine drum unit for Brother's current TN920 workgroup platform: 45,000 rated pages at $320.79 against a $449.11 list — under a cent a page for the surface that forms every image those twenty models print. It carries no toner; it is the long-life partner to the whole TN920 cartridge ladder, from the standard fill to the UXXL. The cartridges themselves and the platform's other supplies are stocked in the Brother range at Clever Supplies.
