Frequently Asked Questions

What is a MICR version of the Q5945A for?

Printing checks. This is the MICR build of the 45A black cartridge — a single unit at $61.85, rated for 20,000 pages — filled with magnetic toner so the encoded line along the bottom of a check can be read by bank processing equipment. Ordinary toner prints the line visibly but not magnetically.

Which machines can print checks with it?

Any member of the family that starts with the LaserJet 4345. The cartridge fits the standard slot, so a department MFP can run its normal work on regular cartridges and switch to this MICR unit when a check run is queued.

Should a test run be printed before live checks?

Yes — treat it as part of the setup, not an optional extra. Print a small batch on your check stock, confirm alignment of the encoded line and the placement of every field, and have your bank verify a sample before committing to production runs.

Does buying MICR toner guarantee the bank will accept our checks?

No, and no cartridge can promise that. Acceptance depends on the whole chain: check stock, line placement, signal strength and the bank's own readers. What this cartridge provides is the magnetic toner the process requires; the test-and-verify step with your bank remains yours to complete.

Can the MICR cartridge be used for ordinary documents too?

It will print them — it is still black toner — but it is bought for check stock, and most offices keep it reserved for that purpose so the dedicated unit is always the one in the machine when payroll or payables are run.

What terms cover a MICR purchase?

The same as our regular cartridges: a 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns, detailed on our shipping & returns page. Stock ships from warehouses in IL, PA, GA, and CA, and support answers Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5 PM CST.

About This Q5945A MICR Cartridge

Check printing is the one job in a general office where the toner itself is specified, and this listing is that specification: the MICR variant of the Q5945A in our HP compatible range, for the 4345 and M4345 family.

Bought deliberately rather than routinely, it rewards a deliberate routine: keep it sealed until a check run, test on your own stock, and let your bank's confirmation — not the first printed check — be the green light for production.
