What makes this cartridge different from the standard Q5942A?
The toner. This is the MICR version of the 42A: its toner is magnetic, formulated so the account and routing characters along the bottom of a cheque can be read by bank sorting equipment. In every other respect — fit, handling, the 10,000-page rating — it behaves as the family cartridge for machines such as the LaserJet 4240 and the 4250/4350 series.
Can it print ordinary documents too?
Yes. MICR toner prints normal text perfectly well, and many small offices run one cartridge for both cheques and correspondence rather than swapping. The premium — $153.59 for this single — is paid for the magnetic formulation, so heavy cheque volume is what justifies it.
Will our bank accept cheques printed with it?
That depends on the whole print chain, not the cartridge alone: cheque stock, character placement and printer condition all feed the reader's verdict. We therefore cannot promise any bank's acceptance. Print test cheques on your actual stock and have your bank verify a sample before a live run — that check, done once, is the professional way to start.
What most often causes a cheque to be rejected?
Weak signal from a cartridge at the very end of its life, or characters drifting out of position. Keeping the MICR cartridge reasonably fresh, and re-verifying after any printer service, removes most of the risk that sits within your control.
Any storage advice specific to cheque printing?
Keep the cartridge sealed until fitting, as with any toner — and treat printed cheque stock with the same care you would the cartridge: it is a financial instrument from the moment the MICR line lands on it.

About This Q5942A MICR Cartridge
Cheque printing is the one job in the office where the reader is a machine at a bank, not a person at a desk — which is why this specialised version of the 42A exists in our HP range. Payroll and accounts-payable runs on a 4250 or 4350 are its natural home.
The cartridge asks for one habit ordinary toner does not: verify before you rely. A short test batch, confirmed with your bank, converts MICR from a hope into a procedure — and after that, it is simply the cartridge you fit when cheques are on the schedule.
No troubles and the price was little high but ok. Packaged well.
