Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CE278A the same cartridge as the HP 78A?

Yes — they are two names for one cartridge. 78A is the short family name HP prints on the printer's supply label, and CE278A is the full part number for that same black cartridge. This listing is a single CE278A in black, priced at $26.60.

What does the 2,100-page rating actually cover?

It is the standard test yield for the cartridge: about 2,100 letter or A4 pages of ordinary office text at typical coverage. Dense contracts and full-page graphics draw toner faster, while short memos and emails stretch it further — most mixed desk work lands near the rating.

How hard is the swap when the old cartridge runs out?

Open the top of the printer, pull the spent cartridge straight out, and unpack this one, removing its protective pieces and rocking it gently side to side so the toner settles evenly. It slides into the same bay until it seats, the lid closes, and you are printing again within a few minutes.

Prints have gone faint before the cartridge is empty. What helps?

Take the cartridge out and rock it slowly from side to side a few times. Toner settles toward one end as the cartridge works, and redistributing it usually restores even darkness for the pages that remain. If output stays patchy after that, the cartridge is genuinely near its end.

Can I keep this cartridge on a shelf until it is needed?

Yes. Leave it sealed, flat and indoors, away from heaters and sunny windows. There is no activation step and no expiry routine to manage — a cartridge stored that way is simply ready for the day the low-toner warning appears.

What backing comes with the purchase?

The cartridge is covered by a 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns. If a print problem has you unsure whether the cartridge is at fault, the support team is available Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5 PM CST to talk it through first.

About This CE278A Black Cartridge

This is the straightforward single replacement for the black slot of HP's compact LaserJet Pro family: one CE278A (78A) cartridge rated at 2,100 pages, at $26.60. It serves the P1566 and P1606dn printers and the LaserJet M1536dnf multifunction machine, covering everyday correspondence, invoices and forms in black only — this is a monochrome family, so there is no colour companion cartridge to match it with.

Orders leave from whichever of our IL, PA, GA and CA warehouses is nearest to you; delivery windows and the returns process are set out on the shipping & returns page, and the wider range of cartridges for other machines sits in the HP section of the catalogue.
