Frequently Asked Questions
How do we put a defensible toner cost on the B5465's output?
Divide the cartridge price by its rating: $106.93 over 6,000 pages gives about 1.78 cents per page. That is the number to carry into a budget or a chargeback, with one honest caveat — the rating assumes standard page coverage, so a department printing dense, graphic-heavy pages will land somewhat above it, and a text-only department can land close to it.
What is 6,000 pages in terms of the paper we actually buy?
Twelve reams. A ream is 500 sheets, so one of these cartridges — Dell part number 331-9797 — is rated to see through twelve reams of paper, a little over one standard case. If you know how fast your B5465 empties a case of paper, you already know roughly how long this cartridge lasts in your office.
Why not just buy the cheapest cartridge that turns up in a search?
Because the sticker price is the least informative number on the page. What matters for a department printer is pages per cartridge and cost per page: a cheaper unit with half the rating costs more per sheet and stops the machine twice as often. This one is rated at 6,000 pages at about 1.78 cents a page — mid-priced for its class, and stated plainly so you can compare like with like.
Is this cartridge made by Dell?
No. It is a compatible cartridge produced by a third-party manufacturer to the same specification as Dell's own 331-9797. You are not paying for the Dell name on the carton; you are paying for the rated capacity and the warranty standing behind it.
How long can our spare sit on the shelf before we use it?
Kept sealed, flat, cool and dry, a toner cartridge waits patiently — shelf storage in its original packaging is the normal way departments hold these. Avoid a hot storeroom or a sunny windowsill, open it only when the working cartridge is ready to come out, and the spare will print as it should when its turn comes.
What happens if this cartridge fails well short of 6,000 pages?
It comes back. The cartridge is backed by a 1-year warranty with 1-year free returns, and our support team works Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST. The terms in full are on our shipping & returns page.
