Frequently Asked Questions

What makes toner "MICR" — and why can't we just print checks with the regular cartridge?

MICR stands for magnetic ink character recognition. The numbers along the bottom of a check are read by bank equipment through their magnetic signal, and MICR toner is formulated with magnetic material so those characters produce one. Regular toner produces none: the check looks identical on your desk, then fails or is hand-processed at the bank. This 330-2650 (PK941-J) is the MICR jumbo cartridge for the Dell Laser 2330d, 2330dn and 2350d — the version of the cartridge intended for check stock rather than correspondence.

What does "jumbo yield" get us at 9,000 pages?

At $90.57 for a 9,000-page rating, the working cost is about 1.01 cents per page. In check terms, with three checks to a sheet that is a lot of individual checks between cartridge changes — and every cartridge change mid-run is a chance to print a batch on the wrong toner, which is the most common way check printing goes wrong in a small office. Fewer changes, fewer mistakes: that, more than the cents, is the operational point of the jumbo size.

Do we need special check paper as well?

The cartridge is one part of a three-part system: MICR toner, a MICR font in your check-printing software, and blank check stock to print on. This cartridge covers the first of the three. If your printed MICR line is positioned correctly and your stock is proper check stock, this toner gives the line the magnetic readability the bank's reader needs. If checks still reject, check the font and line placement in your software before blaming the toner — layout errors reject just as reliably as non-magnetic toner does.

Can the 2350d keep this cartridge for everything, checks and letters alike?

Yes. MICR toner prints normal documents normally; the magnetic content only registers with a bank reader. Offices that print a weekly check run plus daily paperwork often leave a MICR cartridge in the machine permanently, which also removes the classic accident of running checks through on the standard cartridge someone swapped in for a big mail merge. The 9,000-page rating applies across all of it.

Is this made by Dell?

No — this is a compatible 330-2650 (PK941-J) jumbo MICR cartridge, manufactured by a third party to the same specification for the Laser 2330d, 2330dn and 2350d. You are buying the specification and the stated rating at the $90.57 price, not the Dell name on the carton.

What if the bank's reader still rejects our checks?

Work the diagnosis in order: confirm the MICR cartridge (not a standard one) is fitted, print one low-value test check, and put it through your bank's process. If a correctly fitted MICR cartridge produces an unreadable line, that is a product fault, and this cartridge comes with a 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns — the details live on our shipping and returns page. Orders ship from Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia or California warehouses, and support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
