Frequently Asked Questions

What cartridge does the M402dn use?

The LaserJet M402dn takes the CF226A black cartridge — the HP 26A — rated at up to 3,100 pages. This page sells that cartridge for the M402dn by name, at $32.48.

Why does a shared printer seem to eat cartridges faster?

Because everyone prints and nobody counts. The M402dn sits on the network serving a whole team, so its cartridge absorbs the combined output of every desk around it. The cartridge is not failing early — it is doing several people's worth of printing.

Can I check the toner level without walking to the printer?

Yes. The M402dn carries an embedded web server: open the printer's page in a browser on the same network and the supplies view shows the CF226A level. An administrator can check it from their desk and order before anyone's job comes out faded.

Does the dn's two-sided printing change toner use?

Duplex printing saves paper, not toner per printed page — the yield rating counts printed pages, so a 20-page report uses the same toner whether it lands on 20 sheets or 10. What duplex really buys is a paper bill cut roughly in half on long documents.

Should a shared machine keep a spare on hand?

It is the sensible arrangement. When a printer serves a whole team, an empty cartridge idles several people at once. One sealed CF226A in the cabinet by the printer turns the low-toner warning into a one-minute swap.

What warranty and returns come with it?

The cartridge is backed by our 1-year warranty and 1-year free returns. Orders ship from warehouses in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia and California — the details are on our shipping and returns page — and support is available Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.

About This Black Cartridge for the M402dn

A networked printer lives a different life from a personal one: more users, more volume, and a cartridge whose 3,100-page rating is spent by a team rather than a person. This CF226A (26A black) at $32.48 is the cartridge that life runs on.

The practical lesson of the dn model is visibility — check the level over the network, keep one spare by the machine, and the shared printer never becomes the office's bottleneck.
