Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a copier of this vintage still worth feeding?
Because it still works. These small copiers were built like appliances, and plenty of 816s are quietly running offices decades on. At $28.81 for a rated 7,000 pages, keeping one in service costs a fraction of replacing the machine — as long as it copies cleanly, the economics are not close.
How long does one cartridge last in a machine like this?
At the gentle volumes most surviving 816s see — a few hundred pages a month — a 7,000-page cartridge can run well over a year, often closer to two. The rating assumes about 5% coverage, so everyday letters and forms track near it; heavy dark copying shortens the run.
Why does a listing for the 816 carry a Ricoh cartridge number?
Roughly 0.41 cents: $28.81 across a rated 7,000 pages. For a machine that asks for a cartridge once a year or less, that is a very cheap way to keep legacy hardware productive. Bigger appetites are served by the two- and four-packs on this page.
Is toner still easy to get for a machine this old?
From us, yes — we stock this cartridge and ship from warehouses in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia and California. That availability is precisely what keeps these copiers viable: the hardware rarely dies before the supply shelf does, and our shelf is not empty.
If I buy this and the copier finally gives up, am I stuck with the cartridge?
No. Unopened cartridges can be returned free within a year of purchase, and a faulty one is covered by a one-year warranty — full details on our shipping and returns page. You are not gambling on the machine outliving the toner.
