Frequently Asked Questions

My color cartridges still show toner — why did the printer stop on black?

Because black quietly does most of the work in a color printer. Text, barcodes, form fields and the gray shading inside charts all come out of the black cartridge, so it empties first even when cyan, magenta and yellow still have life left. And once black is gone, the everyday jobs — invoices, letters, shipping labels — cannot print at all, which is why black is the cartridge to keep an eye on.

How long does a 12,000-page rating actually last in a normal office?

At roughly 1,000 pages a month, expect about a year from this cartridge; a busier desk printing 2,500 pages a month will go through it in around five months. The 12,000-page figure assumes standard text coverage, so pages heavy with graphics, photos or large black fills will pull that number down.

Will this cartridge work in printers besides the C746dn?

Yes. This listing is named for the C746dn, but the C746H2KG is the shared black cartridge for the entire family — it also works in C746DN, C746DTN, C746N, C748DE, C748DTE, C748E, X746DE, X748DE and X748DTE. It fills only the black slot; the color cartridges for these models are separate products.

What does this black cartridge cost me per printed page?

At $96.39 for a rated 12,000 pages, the math works out to about 0.80 cents per page. That is the figure worth comparing when you shop — the cartridge price alone does not tell you much until you divide it by the yield.

What protection do I get if the cartridge disappoints?

Every cartridge we sell carries a one-year warranty, and returns are free within the first year if anything is wrong with it. The steps are laid out on our shipping and returns page, and our support team answers Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.

Where does my order ship from, and how soon?

We stock toner in four warehouses — Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia and California — so most orders travel a short distance to reach you. Orders placed on business days are processed promptly, and the warehouse closest to you handles the shipment.
