Frequently Asked Questions
Why replace all four cartridges at the same time?
Color balance. On an imageCLASS color machine, cyan, magenta, yellow and black age together through the same documents, and when one cartridge is brand new while the other three are nearly spent, prints can drift — colors look slightly off because one channel is laying down toner at full strength while the others are fading. A full set — the 040HBK black rated at 12,500 pages plus the 040HC, 040HM and 040HY colors at 10,000 pages each — resets all four channels to the same starting point, so the machine's color output stays consistent across the whole cycle rather than degrading unevenly.
What exactly is inside this set?
Four cartridges, one of each channel: a black 040HBK rated for up to 12,500 pages, and cyan (040HC), magenta (040HM) and yellow (040HY) cartridges rated for up to 10,000 pages each. Note that the two ratings are different, and deliberately so — in typical office documents black carries the bulk of the page count, so Canon rates the high-yield black higher than the colors. We list the yields separately rather than adding them into a single headline number, because the cartridges run out at different times depending on what you print.
Who is a full 4-color set the right purchase for?
Two situations cover most buyers. The first is the scheduled refresh: a department whose printer shows all four cartridges low at once, where piecemeal replacement would mean four separate interruptions. The second is the new-deployment or hand-me-down machine — a printer arriving in your office with unknown toner history, where starting all four channels fresh gives you a clean baseline and one known date from which to plan. At $220.44 the set averages $55.11 per cartridge across the four.
Will the colors and the black really run out together?
Almost never exactly — and the set does not pretend otherwise. A text-heavy office will exhaust the 12,500-page black and still have color left; a marketing team printing brochures all day will drain the 10,000-page colors first. The point of starting together is a known, balanced baseline, not synchronized emptiness. When one channel does run out later, you replace just that cartridge — the individual 040H cartridges and smaller packs exist for exactly that top-up pattern.
Is this the high-yield family, or the standard 040?
High-yield — check for the H. Every cartridge in this set is from the 040H line (040HBK, 040HC, 040HM, 040HY), which is the long-life counterpart to the standard Canon 040 range. Both families fit the same imageCLASS color printers, including the LBP654 class, but the 040H cartridges are rated for substantially more pages. If your records or your last order just say "040," it is worth confirming which family you actually want before reordering, because the price-per-page comparison only makes sense within the same family.
What protection comes with a set like this?
Each cartridge in the set carries its own cover: a 1-year warranty against defects and 1-year free returns if it does not perform as it should. A fault in one color does not affect the standing of the other three. Full details are on our shipping and returns page, and our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST. Sets ship from our warehouses in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia or California.
