Frequently Asked Questions
Why buy the three colors without the black?
Because in many offices the black is on a completely different replacement rhythm. The 040HBK black is rated at 12,500 pages and is often bought in its own multi-packs by text-heavy departments, while the colors — 040HC cyan, 040HM magenta, 040HY yellow, rated at 10,000 pages each — deplete together through the same color documents. This 3-color set at $185.43 lets you refresh the color channels as a group without paying for another black you do not need yet. It averages $61.81 per cartridge across the three.
Do the three colors really wear out at the same rate?
Closer than you might expect. A color page uses cyan, magenta and yellow together in varying proportions, so across thousands of mixed documents the three channels tend to decline in the same broad window — one usually crosses the line first, but the other two are rarely far behind. Replacing them as a set keeps color output consistent: a brand-new cyan beside a nearly empty magenta is a recipe for prints whose color balance looks subtly wrong even though no single cartridge has technically failed.
What are the signs a color cartridge is fading rather than the printer failing?
Colors shifting in a particular direction are the classic tell. Blues and greens going dull or muddy points at cyan; reds turning orange-ish and skin tones looking off points at magenta; prints losing their brightness, with yellows washing out, points at yellow fading first — yellow is the easiest depletion to miss because the eye notices its absence last. Before blaming the machine, print a test page and look at each color block individually; the weak channel usually identifies itself.
How does this set compare with the 6-color version?
The 6-color set is simply this refresh bought twice in advance — two cycles of cyan, magenta and yellow — at $352.37, which is $18.49 less than buying two of these 3-color sets separately. Choose this set if you refresh colors as they fall due and keep black stocked separately; choose the 6 if your color volume is high, predictable, and you would rather hold the second cycle on the shelf than place a second order later in the year.
Can I mix this set with a black cartridge bought elsewhere in the family?
Yes — the channels are independent. These are the standard 040H color codes, 040HC, 040HM and 040HY, and they work alongside any 040HBK black cartridge in the same imageCLASS machine, including the LBP654 class. One caution that applies across the whole platform: make sure your black is genuinely the 040H high-yield and not the standard 040, because the two families look similar on an order list but carry very different page ratings, and mixing up the reorder is the most common 040-family mistake.
What cover do the three cartridges carry?
Each one is covered individually by our 1-year warranty against defects and 1-year free returns if it does not perform as it should — a problem with a single color never means returning the whole set. The set ships from our warehouses in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia or California, the full terms are on our shipping and returns page, and support is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
