Before blaming an MFC-J680DW for a 'Cannot Detect' message, remember what Brother's own support pages say about its setup ink: the LC203 Starter cartridges supplied with a new printer are not the retail high-yield specification and can produce exactly that message — retail cartridges are a different part. The printer itself belongs to the WorkSmart six-model group, where the ladder is standard LC201 (260 pages) under high-yield LC203 (550 pages) and nothing above LC203. Sharing runs one way: LC203 works everywhere LC201 works, but LC201 works only here, on the six WorkSmart models — the Business Smart six never accept it. One labeling note, stated openly on the product pages: LC201 singles in our range are fulfilled with LC203-bodied cartridges, same case and same slot, labeled for LC201.

Chip, ink and everyday use
