What is the difference between this drum unit and a toner cartridge?

They do different jobs inside the same assembly. The toner cartridge — the TN750, for example — holds the powder that becomes the print. This DR720 drum is the imaging cylinder that transfers that toner onto the page. Toner runs out every few thousand pages; the drum wears gradually over a much longer life, up to 12,000 pages.

What is the drum counter reset, and must I do it?

Yes. The printer tracks drum life by page count rather than by sensing the part, so after fitting a new drum you reset the counter from the printer's menu (the exact steps for your model are in its guide). Skip it and the drum warning stays on even though the drum is brand new; do it and the next 12,000 pages are tracked correctly.

Can I keep using my current toner cartridge with this new drum?

Absolutely — that is the normal arrangement. Lift your part-used TN750 or TN720 cartridge out of the old drum, click it into this one, and carry on printing. No toner is wasted by a drum change, and the same applies in reverse when the toner runs out first.
