    Frequently Asked Questions

Who still needs a drum for fax-era machines like the Intellifax?

More offices than you would guess. Thousands of Brother fax machines and early laser printers built around the DR400 are still in daily service — in medical offices, lawyer's practices, workshops and back offices where the machine simply keeps working. As long as those machines run, their drums wear out on schedule: the DR400 is rated for 20,000 pages, and when it is spent, faxes and prints come out streaked and grey no matter how fresh the toner is.

What is the difference between the DR400 and the toner cartridge that goes with it?

They are two separate parts doing two separate jobs. The toner cartridge carries the powder and is the part you replace every few thousand pages. The DR400 is the imaging drum the toner works through — it holds no powder of its own and is replaced far less often, roughly once for every many toner cartridges. A machine asking for toner needs the cartridge; a machine printing dirty pages with plenty of toner left usually needs this drum.

My faxes have streaks and a grey background — drum or toner?

Streaks running down the page and a grey haze across white areas are drum symptoms far more often than toner symptoms. Low toner fades output evenly from the edges; a tired drum surface lays toner where it does not belong, which is what produces the shading and lines. If a new toner cartridge did not clear it, the DR400 — after up to 20,000 pages of service — is the part to change.

Can this drum be refurbished or refilled instead of replaced?

No — a drum unit is not a refillable item. Its photosensitive surface wears physically with every rotation, and once that surface is scratched or exhausted there is nothing to top up. Wiping the corona wire can clear loose dust and mild streaking, but a drum that has printed its rated 20,000 pages is finished, and a new genuine DR400 is the repair.

    Which machines use the DR400?

The list is long — around forty models. It includes the DCP-1200 and DCP-1400, the HL-1030, HL-1240, HL-1250, HL-1270N, HL-1440, HL-1450 and HL-1470N printers, the MFC-8300, MFC-8500, MFC-8600, MFC-8700, MFC-9600, MFC-9700, MFC-9800 and MFC-9870 series, the Intellifax 4100, 4750, 5750 and 8500 fax machines and the FAX 8350P and 8750P. If your machine dates from that era and prints through a separate drum, this is very likely its drum.

What cover do I get if something is wrong with it?

Genuine Brother items bought from us come with a 30-day return window that applies in every case — a drum that arrives damaged or proves faulty goes back to us within that period. After the first 30 days, protection runs through Brother's manufacturer warranty rather than the store. You can read the return steps on our shipping & returns page; support hours are 9 AM to 5 PM CST, Monday to Friday.
