Quite possibly, yes. The toner cartridge only holds the powder; it is the drum unit that transfers that toner onto the paper and builds the image. When a drum reaches the end of its working life, prints fade, streak or come out blotchy even with a brand-new toner installed. The DR510 is rated for 20,000 pages, and once a machine in this family has printed anywhere near that total, a worn drum — not the toner — is the usual reason quality drops off.
No. The DR510 is a drum unit only and holds no toner at all. Your printer uses a separate toner cartridge for the actual powder, and the two parts have completely different service lives: toner cartridges are swapped every few thousand pages, while one DR510 drum is expected to keep working through several of them. If your display is asking for toner, this is not the part it wants; if it says the drum needs attention, it is.
It means the machine's page counter has reached the drum's rated 20,000-page life. The printer will usually keep running for a while after the message appears, but the drum surface is worn by then, so fading, repeating marks and grey background shading tend to follow. Clearing the counter without changing the drum does not restore the surface — it only silences the reminder. Fitting a new DR510 is what brings the print quality back.
Longer than most people expect. A small office printing a few hundred pages a week can take well over a year to work through a single DR510, and during that time several toner cartridges will be used up and replaced. That is exactly why drum problems confuse people: the drum was installed so long ago that nobody connects today's faded output with a part they last thought about many toner changes back.
This drum serves Brother's older workgroup range: the DCP-8040, DCP-8040D, DCP-8045D and DCP-8045DN copiers, the HL-5130, HL-5140, HL-5150D, HL-5170D and HL-5170DN printers (including the LT and DLT tray variants), and the MFC-8120, MFC-8220, MFC-8440, MFC-8640D, MFC-8840 and MFC-8840DN multifunction machines. If your machine is one of these and its output has gone downhill, the DR510 is the drum it was built around.
