Because the machines refuse to die. The DR200 serves Brother's HL-720, HL-730 and HL-760 printers, the MFC-4300, MFC-4350, MFC-4450 and MFC-4650 multifunctions, the MFC-6550MC, MFC-6650MC and MFC-7550MC plain-paper fax machines, and the IntelliFax-2600, 2750, 3550 and 3650. Thousands of these are still faxing in medical offices, law firms and warehouses where the fax line is a compliance fixture, not a nostalgia act. As long as they run, the drum — the part that actually forms the image — remains the one component that eventually forces the issue, and a genuine DR200 at $214.99 against a $322.49 list price is what keeps a working machine working for another 20,000 pages.
It is a drum — the imaging unit, not a toner supply. The DR200 contains no toner. Your machine's toner cartridge slides into this drum, and together they form the print engine: toner provides the powder, the drum's photosensitive surface provides the image. If your pages are simply light, order toner. If the same defect repeats down the page, the background has gone grey, or output stays dirty with a cartridge you know is good, the drum underneath is the worn part.
Longer than most owners expect. Fax duty is light duty: a machine receiving and sending a few dozen pages a day works through 20,000 pages over many years. Even at 100 pages a day, every day, the DR200 covers the better part of a year. For the typical surviving IntelliFax or MFC-4xxx installation, one genuine drum is realistically the last major part the machine will ever need — which makes its per-page cost, a little over one cent, almost beside the point.
Check the code on the drum currently in the machine: pull the cartridge-and-drum assembly out and the drum unit is the frame the toner sits in — it is marked DR200 on this whole generation (HL-7xx, MFC-43xx/44xx/46xx, MFC-6xxx/7xxx MC series and the IntelliFax models listed above). The vintage of these printers means cartridge codes vary by region and era, but the drum specification does not: one DR200 across the platform.
Three things. Transfer your existing toner cartridge into the new drum — nothing about this purchase replaces your toner. Keep the green drum surface covered and untouched until the moment of fitting; it is light-sensitive and fingerprints print forever. And reset the drum counter using the front-panel sequence in your manual: these machines cannot detect a new drum themselves, so without the reset the machine will keep insisting the old drum is fitted.
The store offers a 30-day return window on genuine Brother products, whatever the reason, and any manufacturing fault is covered by Brother's manufacturer warranty — see our shipping and returns page for the complete terms. Because these are legacy machines, we suggest confirming your model against the compatibility list before ordering; and if the unit arrives damaged, our support team is on hand Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
This is the genuine Brother DR200 drum unit — the 20,000-page imaging component for the HL-720/730/760, MFC-4300-series and IntelliFax generation of Brother fax machines and printers, priced at $214.99 against a $322.49 list. For machines that have been faxing since the 1990s, a fresh genuine drum is usually the single repair that restores clean, legible output. The rest of our genuine range is in the Brother section of the store. We dispatch from warehouses in IL, PA, GA and CA.
