It works because the drum and the toner do different jobs. The DR223CL is the imaging unit of Brother's compact colour platform — the HL-3210CW, HL-3230CDW, HL-3270CDW and MFC-L3750CDW generation — and that platform accepts two toner tiers: the standard TN223 cartridges (1,400 pages black, 1,300 per colour) and the high-yield TN227s (3,000 black, 2,300 per colour). Whichever tier you run, the cartridges click into the same drum architecture, and this 18,000-page drum unit sits underneath all of them. Upgrading from TN223 to TN227 changes your cartridge interval; it does not change your drum.
