Frequently Asked Questions

Why does one drum cover twenty-one different printers?

Because Brother built a whole business-colour generation on one engine. The DR310CL is the drum unit for the HL-4140CN, HL-4150CDN and HL-4570CDW family and everything derived from it — twenty-one models in our list, including the MFC-9460CDN, MFC-9560CDW and MFC-9970CDW multifunctions and the DCP-9055CDN and DCP-9270CDN. All of them run TN310 standard or TN315 high-yield toner against this same 25,000-page drum specification. One engine, one drum, a lot of badge variants — which is why this platform stayed cheap to run for so long.

What does the DR310CL work out at per page?

Priced at $256.39 against a $358.95 list — a saving of $102.56 — and rated at 25,000 pages, the drum costs almost exactly one cent per page. That sits between the compact colour drums and the flagship DR433CL, entirely in line for a business platform of this era. As ever with drums, the sticker is a once-in-years event: across the same 25,000 pages you will buy several times this amount in TN310 or TN315 toner.

How many toner cartridges does one drum support?

About ten TN310BK blacks (2,500 pages each) or just over four TN315BK high-yields (6,000 pages), and on the colour side roughly sixteen standard TN310 colours or seven TN315 colours per station. In calendar terms, a department doing 1,500 pages a month changes this drum about every sixteen months; lighter offices, every three years or so. The drum message on these machines is therefore a planned purchase, not an emergency — order when it first appears and fit at your convenience.

My MFC-9560CDW shows repeating defects in one colour only. One drum or all of them?

On this platform each colour station works against its own DR310CL drum, so a defect confined to one colour, repeating at a steady interval, indicts that colour's drum alone. Change the one unit, transfer its toner cartridge across, reset that station's count, and leave the other drums to run out their remaining life. Defects across every colour at once are rarer and usually mean the whole set has aged together — or that the problem is elsewhere entirely, such as the belt unit, which is a different part.

What is the difference between this and the DR310CL's toner-side counterparts?

Buyers mix the codes up, so to be plain: TN310 and TN315 are toner cartridges — the powder. DR310CL is the drum — the imaging surface the powder lands on, containing no toner at all. If the printer says toner low, a drum will not help; if prints carry repeating marks with a cartridge you have already replaced, toner will not help. The drum is also the long-life partner in the pair, rated at 25,000 pages against the cartridges' 1,500 to 6,000.

What are my return options on this drum unit?

Genuine Brother products in this store carry a 30-day return window from delivery, in all cases, with Brother's manufacturer warranty behind them for defects — the details are on our shipping and returns page. With twenty-one models on the compatibility list, an ordering mix-up is easy to make and easy to fix inside that window; our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
