Frequently Asked Questions

What does MICR mean on this cartridge?

MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. This version of the 106R00688 is filled with magnetic toner, the kind banks' reader-sorter equipment can scan. It exists for one main job: printing checks, where the account and routing line along the bottom has to be machine-readable. The cartridge is rated at up to 10,000 pages and priced at $99.29.

Why would I choose this over the regular 106R00688?

Only if you print checks. The standard 106R00688 cartridge is the everyday office cartridge; this MICR unit is the specialist. If your workflow includes printing your own business checks on blank check stock, the magnetic toner is what makes those checks scannable at the bank — ordinary toner is not formulated for that.

Does the MICR version cost more than the standard one?

No. Both are priced at $99.29, so choosing the check-printing version carries no premium at all. You are picking the formulation that matches your work, not paying extra for it — the page rating is the same 10,000 pages either way, roughly 0.99 cents a page.

Which printers can use this MICR cartridge?

The same Phaser 3450 family as the standard cartridge: the Phaser 3450, Phaser 3450B and Phaser 3450D. It installs in the same slot, in the same way — the difference is entirely in the toner inside.

Can I swap between MICR and standard cartridges in the same printer?

Yes, offices do this routinely: the MICR cartridge goes in for a check run, then the standard cartridge goes back in for general documents. Just keep track of which unit is installed, and store the one on the shelf sealed in its packaging so it stays clean and ready.

What if the cartridge gives me trouble?

It carries a 1-year warranty, and returns are free for a full year — the terms are set out on our shipping and returns page. Orders ship from our Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia and California warehouses, and support answers Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
