All three colours on my 6510 faded within a few weeks of each other. Coincidence?

Usually not. The cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges in a Phaser 6510 tend to start their lives on the same day — often the day the printer was unboxed or last fully refilled — and colour work draws on all three at once. Every chart, logo and photograph spends a little of each, and the printer's own calibration cycles sip from all three bays too. So when one bay reaches the end, the other two are rarely far behind. Which cartridges am I actually getting in this box?

Three cartridges, one for each colour bay. The cyan is the 106R03477, the magenta is the 106R03478 and the yellow is the 106R03479 — the three colour codes the 6510 family uses. Black is not part of this set; the printer's black cartridge is a separate listing with its own code, so if your text pages are also fading you will want to order that alongside. What does the set work out to per cartridge and per page?

Do all three have to go in on the same day?

No — and in most offices they should not. Fit only the bay the printer is actually asking for and leave the other two sealed in the box. A cartridge that has never been opened keeps perfectly well on a shelf, while one that has been fitted starts its life in the machine whether you print colour that week or not. Swapping one at a time also tells you which colour was truly empty; if a fresh cartridge does not cure a colour problem, the cause lies elsewhere and you have not spent the other two finding out.

The first few prints after a swap look slightly off. Should I worry?

Give the machine a short run before judging it. A newly fitted cartridge needs a handful of pages to settle — toner distribution evens out and the printer recalibrates its colour balance — so the first sheet or two can look a touch flat or shifted. Print a few ordinary colour documents, or run the printer's colour calibration from its menu, and the output should come back to normal. If colours are still wrong after a dozen pages, that is worth a call to us rather than a second swap.
