Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the black cartridge on a colour printer run out long before the colours?
Because black does the everyday work. Letters, invoices, reports and forms are printed in black alone, while cyan, magenta and yellow only join in for graphics and colour pages. On the ProXpress C3010 and C3060 machines the CLT-K503L is the cartridge behind nearly every page that leaves the tray, and its 8,000-page rating reflects that workload — the colours can look barely touched while the black is asking to be changed.
This listing is headed CLT-503L, but my printer asks for CLT-K503L — is it the same cartridge?
Yes. CLT-503L is the family name for this range; the letter in the middle of the full code identifies the colour, and the black cartridge's own code is CLT-K503L. Matching the code printed on the cartridge you remove is the surest way to reorder, and the code on this cartridge is CLT-K503L.
How far does an 8,000-page rating actually stretch?
The rating is measured at five percent coverage — roughly a page of ordinary text. A text-heavy office will land close to 8,000 pages; pages carrying charts, logos or shaded tables spend toner faster and bring the total down. Treat the figure as the industry's common yardstick rather than a promise, and expect your own count to follow what you actually print.
When the black runs out, do the colour cartridges have to be changed too?
No. The CLT-C503L cyan, CLT-M503L magenta and CLT-Y503L yellow are separate cartridges that empty at their own pace, and each is replaced only when it runs low. The CLT-K503L can be swapped on its own without disturbing colour supplies that still have life in them.
Is there a smaller-capacity black for the same printers?
There is a standard-capacity counterpart, the CLT-K503S, for the same machines. This CLT-K503L is the high-yield version, rated at 8,000 pages, so the choice between them is really about how often you want to open the printer: the L cartridge simply runs far longer between changes.
What protection comes with this compatible cartridge?
A one-year warranty against defects, together with free returns at any point during the first year — the full wording is on our shipping and returns page. If anything about the cartridge concerns you, our support team is available Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
