Frequently Asked Questions

Our X746de spends half its day making copies. How long should one of these cartridges actually last us?

Plan on the 12,000-page rating as a best case, not a promise. That figure assumes about 5% page coverage, and office copies — forms, ID cards, marked-up drafts — often run denser than that, so a copy-heavy machine may see noticeably fewer pages. At 1,500 black pages a month across printing and copying combined, expect roughly six to eight months per cartridge.

Does this one cartridge feed the copier and fax side too, or is it print-only?

It feeds everything that puts black toner on paper: prints, copies, and incoming faxes all draw from this same cartridge. Scanning a document to email or a network folder uses no toner at all. That is why the black cartridge in an MFP usually runs out first even in offices that think of themselves as light printers.

The listing names the X746de, but is this cartridge tied to that one model?

No — C746H2KG is the shared black cartridge for the whole platform, and this listing simply names the X746de. It also fits C746DN, C746DTN, C746N, C748DE, C748DTE, C748E, X746DE, X748DE and X748DTE, so the same box can serve any of those machines. Just remember it is the black cartridge only; each color has its own separate cartridge.

The panel says toner is low. How do I know when it is truly empty?

Low is a warning, not a stop — the X746de will keep printing for a while after the first message. When pages start coming out visibly faded, pull the cartridge and rock it gently side to side to redistribute the remaining toner; that usually buys a short final run. Once output fades again after that, the cartridge is genuinely done.

Is buying a single cartridge at a time a sensible approach for this machine?

For a lightly used X746de, yes — one cartridge can last many months, and there is no prize for stocking toner you will not touch for a year. Busier departments usually prefer the multi-packs for the lower per-cartridge price and the spare on hand. Either way, this single is the same cartridge that ships in the larger packs.

What happens if this cartridge streaks or fails well before 12,000 pages?

Every cartridge we sell carries a one-year warranty, and returns are free at any point in the first year — the process is spelled out on our shipping and returns page. If a replacement question comes up, our support team answers Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST. A defective cartridge is a swap, not an argument.
