Frequently Asked Questions

With both trays loaded and long runs queued, how fast does black really disappear?

Faster than the rating suggests if the work is dense. The 12,000-page yield assumes ordinary text coverage; long runs of graphics-heavy pages, presentation handouts or forms with heavy black fills draw noticeably more toner per page. On a tray-fed machine built for volume, plan your change interval from your page counter rather than the calendar.

Does the extra tray change which black cartridge this printer takes?

No — trays change paper handling, not toner. This listing is named for the C746dtn, but the C746H2KG is the one black cartridge for the whole family and it works in C746DN, C746DTN, C746N, C748DE, C748DTE, C748E, X746DE, X748DE and X748DTE. Whatever the paper configuration, the black slot takes this same cartridge; colors remain separate cartridges.

Can I swap the cartridge in the middle of a long print run?

Yes. The printer pauses when the cartridge comes out and picks the job back up once the new one is seated — the run in the trays is not lost. Just let the current page finish, swap, and confirm the job resumes before walking away.

Why does black run out first even though this is a color printer?

Because nearly every page uses black — body text, addresses, barcodes, table lines — while the colors only fire when a page actually has color on it. A stack of two-tray form runs can be 95 percent black work. That is why the black cartridge turns over several times for every once the colors do.

What is my cost per page with this cartridge?

The cartridge is $96.39 with a rated yield of 12,000 pages, so black toner lands at roughly 0.80 cents per page under standard coverage. Dense, graphics-heavy work costs more per page in practice — that is a property of the pages, not the cartridge.

What backing comes with the cartridge?

A one-year warranty covers it, and if it falls short you can return it free of charge within the first year — the process is described on our shipping and returns page. Questions are answered by our team Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
