Frequently Asked Questions
My printer's supply list shows two different black cartridges — TN635BK and TN635XLBK. What is going on?
Both are genuine black cartridges for the same machines; they differ only in how much toner they hold. This TN635BK is the standard-fill cartridge, rated at 3,000 pages. The TN635XLBK is the high-yield version at 5,500 pages, and there is also a super high-yield TN635XXLBK at 7,500 pages. The printer accepts any of the three in the same slot — the code tells you the fill level, not a different fitting.
What does the 3,000-page rating mean in everyday terms?
It is measured at the industry-standard 5% page coverage — roughly a page of ordinary business text. An office printing mostly documents at that coverage can expect something close to 3,000 pages; heavy graphics and dense pages use toner faster. For a small team printing a few hundred black pages a month, one TN635BK typically covers the better part of a year.
What is my cost per page with this cartridge?
At our price of $108.79 for 3,000 rated pages, the arithmetic works out to about 3.6 cents per black page. That is the standard tier's trade-off: the lowest upfront price of the three black options, at the highest cost per page. If you print in real volume, the XL cartridge brings the per-page figure down to roughly 2.5 cents — worth comparing before you decide which tier suits your workload.
Can I mix this standard black with high-yield color cartridges?
Yes. Each color slot in these printers is independent, and each accepts the standard, XL or XXL version of its own color. A standard TN635BK alongside high-yield colors, or the reverse, works perfectly well — many offices run a high-yield black for documents and standard colors for occasional color work.
What are the return and warranty terms on this cartridge?
Faulty or not, a genuine Brother cartridge bought here can be returned within 30 days of delivery — that is our store's returns rule for original-brand supplies in every case. After the 30 days, any defect is covered by Brother's manufacturer warranty. The step-by-step return process is on our shipping & returns page, and our support team is on hand Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
