Why have my greens turned blue and my oranges turned red?

Because both of those colors are recipes, and yellow is an ingredient in each one. Green is cyan mixed with yellow, orange is magenta mixed with yellow — so when the yellow cartridge runs down, both mixes lose their warm half at the same time: grass slides toward blue, oranges harden into red, and the whole page quietly goes cold. Black text is untouched, which is why nothing looks broken. A photograph with grass or fruit in it is the fastest tell there is.

The printer says yellow is low, but I never print anything yellow — how can that be?

Almost nothing you print is pure yellow, yet yellow hides inside far more than you would guess: every green, every orange, warm grays, skin tones, the gold in a logo, the highlight color in a chart. Nearly every color page spends a little of it. The machine tracks powder consumed across all of those pages, not pages that happen to look yellow — so the 106R01394 can honestly reach the end of its life in an office that swears it prints no yellow at all.
