Frequently Asked Questions

The cartridge that came with our ML-3712ND has run out — will this one last longer?

Very likely, yes. Printers usually ship with a part-filled starter cartridge that is only meant to get the machine set up and proven, so it empties sooner than owners expect. This MLT-D205L is a full high-yield cartridge rated at 5,000 pages, which is why the second cartridge in a printer's life so often outlasts the first by a wide margin.

We print a mix of letters and dense reports — how close to 5,000 pages should we plan on?

Plan on something near it, but treat the rating as a benchmark rather than a promise. The 5,000-page figure is measured at 5% page coverage; a page of ordinary correspondence sits close to that, while dense reports, tables and graphics pull more toner onto each sheet and pull the total down. A mixed office workload usually lands a little under the headline number rather than a little over.

Which other machines in the building take this same cartridge?

The MLT-D205L is shared well beyond the ML-3712ND: the ML-3310 and ML-3310D, the ML-3312, ML-3312D and ML-3312ND, the ML-3710, ML-3710DW and ML-3712DW, and the SCX-4833, SCX-4835 and SCX-5637 multifunction machines. If several of those are dotted around the office, one cartridge type — and one spare on the shelf — covers all of them.

What does a printed page cost us with this cartridge?

At $39.02 for a rated 5,000 pages, the toner element of a page works out at about 0.78 cents. For a shared workgroup printer that is a useful budgeting figure: multiply it by the machine's monthly page count and you have the toner line of its running costs, before paper.

The toner light is on but the pages still look clean — how long can we keep going?

Usually further than the light suggests. The warning is the printer's estimate, not a hard stop, and there is normally usable toner left after it appears. Keep printing until the output genuinely begins to fade; at that point, removing the MLT-D205L and rocking it gently side to side redistributes what remains and often buys a few hundred extra pages — enough to finish the week while a replacement is on its way.

If the cartridge develops a fault in its first months, what happens?

It comes back to us. This cartridge carries a one-year warranty with free returns running for the same year, so a unit that leaks, streaks or gives up early is returned at no cost to you. The steps are set out on the shipping and returns page, and support is on hand Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST.
