Both fit the Xpress M2880 identically; the MLT-D115L high-yield cartridge simply holds more toner and costs less per page, while the MLT-D115S standard cartridge costs less upfront. For a mono all-in-one with steady volume, the L cartridge means fewer swaps and lower running costs. Light or occasional users do fine with the S — toner does not improve with age, so there is no benefit to buying capacity you will not use within a year or so.
The Xpress M2880 does not recognize my new toner cartridge. What fixes it?
Switch the Xpress M2880 off, remove the cartridge, and wipe the chip contacts with a dry lint-free cloth before reinstalling it with a firm push until it clicks. A cartridge exposed to heat or cold in shipping can misread until it reaches room temperature. If a third-party cartridge is repeatedly rejected, the printer firmware is likely refusing its chip, and a genuine MLT-D115 cartridge is the dependable alternative.
Does duplex printing on the Xpress M2880 save toner?
Yes for paper, no for toner: duplexing on the Xpress M2880 halves paper use but each side still gets a full toner image, so MLT-D115S or MLT-D115L consumption per page is unchanged. The real toner saver is the driver's toner-save or draft mode, which lightens every page whether single- or double-sided.
