Light or occasional users do fine with the S — toner does not improve with age, so there is no benefit to buying capacity you will not use within a year or so.
The Xpress M2830 does not recognize my new toner cartridge. What fixes it?
Switch the Xpress M2830 off, remove the cartridge, and wipe the chip contacts with a dry lint-free cloth before reinstalling it with a firm push until it clicks. A cartridge exposed to heat or cold in shipping can misread until it reaches room temperature. If a third-party cartridge is repeatedly rejected, the printer firmware is likely refusing its chip, and a genuine MLT-D115 cartridge is the dependable alternative.
