Frequently Asked Questions

How long will one cartridge last a small office?

Longer than most people expect. A small office printing around 500 pages a month would take close to two years to use up the rated 12,000 pages; at 1,500 pages a month it is roughly eight months. The rating assumes text-weight coverage, so heavy graphics shorten the run — but for everyday office documents the estimate holds up well.

It is a color printer — why does the black cartridge empty first?

Because most office pages are black pages: letters, invoices, contracts and reports, with color appearing only here and there. Every one of those pages draws on this cartridge, while cyan, magenta and yellow sit idle most of the time. When black runs dry, the bulk of a small office's work stops with it.

Will this fit other printers, or only the C746n?

It fits the family. The listing is titled for the C746n, but the C746H2KG is the common black cartridge across the platform — it also works in C746DN, C746DTN, C746N, C748DE, C748DTE, C748E, X746DE, X748DE and X748DTE. It covers the black position only; the color cartridges for these models are their own separate products.

What does black toner cost per page in this size?

The cartridge is $96.39 and rated at 12,000 pages, which comes to about 0.80 cents per page. For a small office, that per-page figure — not the shelf price — is the honest way to compare one cartridge against another.

What if the cartridge does not perform as it should?

Then it comes back to us: the cartridge is covered by a one-year warranty and returns are free within the first year, following the steps on our shipping and returns page. Our support team is reachable Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST if you'd rather talk it through first.

How fast can a replacement reach me if I run out?

We ship from four warehouses — Illinois, Pennsylvania, Georgia and California — so delivery distances stay short for most customers. Still, black toner is the one cartridge worth ordering before the printer stops, since it is the cartridge your daily work depends on.
