The printer says black is low, but pages still look fine — how long have we got?

Probably longer than the warning implies, but do not plan around it. Low-toner alerts on this family are set conservatively, and a Canon 046H black (046HBK) rated at up to 6,300 pages often has a few hundred pages left when the first notice appears — fine for a quiet week, risky if a big job lands. The sensible move is to order when the warning shows and keep printing on the old cartridge until the new one arrives; fading text, not the warning, is the true end.

How do we tell fading toner from a different problem?

Low toner fades gradually and often unevenly — one side of the page lighter than the other, large black areas going grey. It does not produce sharp lines, repeating spots or blank bands; those point elsewhere. A useful test: remove the cartridge, rock it gently side to side to redistribute the powder, and refit it. If the print darkens for a while, the cartridge is simply running out, and this replacement is the fix.
