Frequently Asked Questions
What does a drum do in a mono printer that never prints colour?
The same job it does anywhere: it carries the image. In the HL-L6250DW, HL-L6400DW and MFC-L6900DW class of mono workgroup machines, the DR890 is the photosensitive drum that picks up toner from the cartridge and transfers your text and graphics onto the page. The toner cartridge is only the powder supply. When pages come out with repeating marks, ghosted images from earlier prints, or a grey film that a fresh cartridge does not fix, the drum — not the toner — is what has worn out.
How many toner cartridges will one DR890 outlast?
The DR890 is rated at 50,000 pages. Matched against this platform's toner range, that is roughly two and a half TN890 ultra-high-yield cartridges (20,000 pages each), about four TN880s (12,000 pages), or a little over six TN850s (8,000 pages). In a department printing a few thousand pages a month, a drum change is an annual-or-rarer event — plan for it the way you plan for any long-interval service part, not as a consumable emergency.
Is this the cheapest drum per page in the Brother mono range?
Effectively, yes. At our sale price of $170.79 — $68.32 below the $239.11 list price — 50,000 rated pages put the DR890 at about a third of a cent per page. Nothing else in Brother's mono drum line runs longer for less money. The purchase price can look steep next to a toner cartridge, but the maths invert over the drum's life: it is the toner that costs you cents per page, the drum that costs fractions.
Which printers use the DR890?
Five high-volume mono models: the HL-L6250DW, HL-L6400DW and HL-L6400DWT printers, plus the MFC-L6750DW and MFC-L6900DW multifunctions. These are the machines at the top of the TN820 / TN850 / TN880 / TN890 platform. Smaller models in the same family tree — the HL-L5100DN generation, for instance — take the DR820 drum instead, and the two are not interchangeable.
Will fitting a new drum clear the "Replace Drum" message on its own?
Not quite — you have to tell the printer. After seating the new DR890 with your existing toner cartridge transferred into it, reset the drum counter through the machine's menu, following the sequence for your model. Skip that and the printer keeps counting the old drum's life and will keep nagging, even though the new unit is fitted. Also slide the corona-wire cleaning tab across and back as the manual shows, and keep your fingers off the drum's green surface throughout.
What if the new drum turns out to be faulty?
Genuine Brother products from this store can be sent back within 30 days of delivery for any reason, and manufacturing defects are covered by Brother's manufacturer warranty — the full wording lives on our shipping and returns page. Report a damaged or faulty unit to our support team Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM CST, as soon as you spot the problem, and keep the packaging until you have printed a clean test page.
