Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a 6,000-page cartridge really last in an MX321adn that copies as well as prints?

Plan on the combined total, not the print count alone. An office putting roughly 800 pages a month through the machine — say 550 prints and 250 copies — will get about seven to eight months from this cartridge. A quieter desk doing 300 pages a month can stretch it close to two years, because the rating counts pages, not calendar time.

Does scanning to email use up toner too?

No — a scan that lands in an inbox or a folder never touches the cartridge. Only pages that come out on paper draw toner, which means prints and walk-up copies both count. That is why an MFP often empties sooner than its print counter suggests: the copies were quietly spending from the same supply.

This listing names the MX321adn — will the cartridge work in other printers?

Yes. The 56F1000 is the shared cartridge for a whole platform of Lexmark machines — MS321DN, MS421DN, MS421DW, MS521DN, MS621DN, MX321ADN, MX521ADE and MX521DE — and this page simply names the MX321adn. If your office also runs one of the bigger models on that list, the same box serves it, so a spare bought for this machine is not stranded if the fleet changes.

How can I tell the cartridge is truly empty rather than the machine needing attention?

An empty cartridge fades evenly across the whole page, on prints and copies alike, usually after a low-toner warning. Gently rocking the cartridge side to side can redistribute the last toner for a short run of extra pages, which confirms the diagnosis. Sharp streaks, repeating marks, or one dark side point to the glass or the machine instead — swapping toner will not fix those.

Can I buy this now and keep it on the shelf for months?

Yes. Sealed toner cartridges store well for long periods — keep the box flat in a dry, room-temperature spot away from direct sunlight and heating vents. The powder inside does not dry out or settle the way liquid ink can, so a cartridge installed next year performs like one installed today.
